Upgrade-Movie Review

June 14, 2020 — Jt Spratley

I watched this move twice before starting this blog. I’d watched it four times by the time I finished it.

Okay, Upgrade movie.

My first thoughts after watching the movie Upgrade: I need to watch this again. I knew there were a lot of little things to symbolize the discrimination than I noticed during the first watch.

This movie merges realistic elements of artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), new world order conspiracies, and bio implants to show the unfortunate possibilities of mankind in the near future.

How well it achieves this isn’t too surprising once you realize the foundation of this movie from the summary:

UPGRADE is a thrilling and hyper-violent vision of the future from the producer of GET OUT and THE PURGE, and the co-creator of SAW and INSIDIOUS.

Just like SAW, the end of the movie bombards you with context to warp what you thought you understood was going on. One of the creators, Leigh Whannell, was in the original SAW project. And like SAW, and Grotesque, the camera doesn’t shy away from action.

Spoiler Alert!

The movie revolves around an anti-AI mechanic, played by Logan Marshall-Green. I adored his pro-AI wife, played by Melanie Vallejo, and their relationship within minutes. The action, and reminders of the disadvantages of AI, starts within 15 minutes. I cried before the 30 minute mark.

The music and sound effects (SFX) fit the intended emotions very well. The camera work in specific scenes is awesome.

IMDb trivia claims that Billy, the SAW doll puppet, and the Linux command
sudo shutdown -h now are visible in the movie. The command was easy to spot.

Upgrade is a great movie to make you think about AI, VR, and how technology affects our lives.

A fake world is a lot less painful than the real one.

Watch Upgrade, the digital Get Out movie about the digital sunken place.
